On Friday, February 11, a Swedish court of appeals overturned the conviction and one-month jail sentence of Pastor Ake Green, who had been found guilty of a hate crime for preaching from the pulpit against homosexuality. The court found that "nothing indicates the pastor used his position as a preacher as a cover for attacking homosexuals," and explained:
"The purpose of making agitation against gays punishable is not to prevent arguments or discussions about homosexuality, not in churches or in other parts of society,"
The Becket Fund filed an amicus brief with the appellate court to remind it of the international human rights treaties that Sweden has signed and that protect the expression of controversial religious views. Our press release praising the decision is here.
